Americal Eclectic is pleased to offer a piece of “forbidden” art history: the 1998 Robert Rauschenberg “Parigi” cup. Originally part of the “World Cups” series, this design was famously recalled and destroyed shortly after release due to a copyright dispute involving the Michelin maps featured in the artwork.
This surviving example features the authentic gold signature on the Madrid saucer, identifying it as an original trade edition piece that escaped the factory recall. Featuring Rauschenberg’s iconic collage aesthetic, the cup depicts a map of Paris while sitting atop a saucer featuring Madrid. For the illy completionist, this is the “Sixth Cup”—the essential piece required to turn a standard set into a complete, museum-grade collection.
